Congratulations! You made the big leap and finally decided to improve your smile with cosmetic dentures. In addition to enjoying an increase in confidence and a dazzling smile, there are a few aftercare tips and precautions you can take to ensure your dentures feel comfortable and look natural.

The First 24 Hours

Immediately following your denture procedure at Edison Dental, do not remove the dentures for the first 24 hours. There may be some oozing of blood around the dentures, but this is entirely normal and to be expected. Your dentures are not only replacing your missing teeth, but protecting the surgical site by controlling bleeding and swelling.

Do not rinse your mouth during this time, nor should you spit, use a straw, or smoke. Be sure to carefully and gently brush your teeth without causing any more bleeding, if possible.

After 24 Hours

You’ll most likely be seen for a follow-up appointment during this time. After your follow-up, you can begin rinsing your mouth with a lukewarm saltwater solution three to four times a day for four to five days. Don’t strain or empty your mouth with unnecessary force.

Be sure to take all prescribed medications at this time. If you get a prescription for a pain reliever, then refrain from operating a motor vehicle. Remember, some discomfort may be felt at this time and is completely normal.

The Next Week

For the next week, you may experience some swelling. This will slowly resolve itself over time as you heal. To assist with pain and reduce swelling, apply a cold compress or bag of ice to the affected side of the face for twenty minutes, then remove it for twenty minutes. Repeat this procedure for 24 hours then discontinue using the ice. This process can help relieve discomfort and provide relief to painful areas of your mouth.

You may also eat and drink as indicated by your dentist, but be sure to avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods. Drink as much fluid as possible, but remember to not consume liquids through a straw. Within a few days after your procedure, you may also resume everyday activities including physical exercise, as tolerated.

At Edison Dental, we want you to be fully satisfied with your new smile. Following these simple guidelines will help speed your recovery and quickly get you smiling with confidence and assuredness.
